AMD’s FSR 4 Technology Coming to PS5 Pro

AMD recently launched its new FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling technology alongside the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 Ti GPUs. Interestingly, this technology won’t be exclusive to PC gaming. According to a Digital Foundry interview with Mark Cerny, a version of FSR 4 will be integrated into the PS5 Pro through a software update.

Cerny explained, “Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR.” The PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) currently allows the console to run games at lower resolutions while making them appear as 4K quality. Cerny described PSSR as being developed using both existing and upcoming AMD technologies.

Performance Details

Reviews of AMD’s new GPUs show that FSR 4 isn’t a huge leap forward but comes with its own pros and cons. In some cases, it runs at lower frame rates than FSR 3, but it makes games look sharper with better detail. This small but clear boost in visual quality might be worth it for gamers who spent $700 on the Pro console.

Development Partnership

This implementation is possible because Sony directly contributed to FSR 4’s development through “Project Amethyst,” a collaboration with AMD. Cerny revealed, “The neural network (and training recipe) in FSR 4’s upscaler are the first results of the Amethyst collaboration.”

AMD and Sony first teamed up to work on machine learning for game graphics, but their collaboration is already improving PlayStation systems. Cerny highlighted how important this partnership is, stating, “FSR 4 and this next evolution of PSSR are a paradigm for our future. Going forward we expect to have our own implementations of each of the algorithms developed through the collaboration.”
