Sony’s $40 Gamble Backfires: Concord Sells Only Thousands

The recent launch of Concord, a new first-person shooter game, was unexpected. The game’s sales figures, after just two weeks on the market, paint a bleak picture. Market analysts estimate that Concord has sold only a few thousand copies across PC and PS5 platforms combined.

Sales Figures and Market Response

On Steam, Concord’s PC version reportedly sold around 10,000 units, while the PS5 version added approximately 15,000 units to the tally. At $40 per copy, these numbers fall far short of expectations, especially considering the substantial financial investment from Sony.

The game’s reception has been lukewarm at best, with a metascore of 66/100. This mediocre response, coupled with low player counts during its open beta, contributed to its current predicament. In stark contrast, the single-player game Black Myth: Wukong managed to sell millions of copies within days of its release.

Industry experts point to several factors behind Concord’s underwhelming performance. The live-service game market is notoriously oversaturated, making it challenging for new titles to gain traction. Games in this genre rely heavily on the network effect – they become more appealing as more people play them. Unfortunately for Concord, its player base needs to grow rapidly to avoid a potential collapse.

Some analysts suggest that Concord might have fared better as a free-to-play title or if it had launched as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription service. These strategies could have given the game a fighting chance in an already crowded genre.

While Sony could potentially relaunch Concord as a free experience to attract more players, there’s concern that the damage may already be irreversible. The gaming community’s initial response and the current player numbers might make it difficult for Concord to recover and establish itself in the competitive multiplayer shooter market.
