Universal Studios Japan uncovers its newest expansion to Super Nintendo World, bringing the iconic Donkey Kong franchise to life. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto recently showcased the upcoming Donkey Kong Country zone, opening December 11, 2024, at Universal Studios Japan.
Fantastic Jungle Experience Awaits Visitors
Guests enter this new world through a grand tunnel connecting the Mushroom Kingdom to a lush jungle environment. The zone perfectly captures Donkey Kong’s 40-year gaming legacy, featuring barrel-themed decorations throughout the area. The expansion includes Donkey Kong’s personal residence and a specialty shop inspired by the character Funky Kong.
Entertainment and attractions fill the zone with engaging activities. Visitors can participate in a rhythm-based game drawing inspiration from Donkey Konga. Using special NFC wristbands, guests collect hidden letters scattered across the area, adding an interactive element to their adventure.
The Golden Temple Takes Center Stage
The crown jewel of this expansion is the Golden Temple ride, drawing inspiration from the beloved mine cart racing sequences in Donkey Kong Country games. This rollercoaster creates an illusion of cart-jumping between tracks, achieved through a cleverly concealed secondary track system ensuring guest safety while delivering excitement.
The culinary experience includes themed treats like a barrel-smashing sundae and unique hot dog creations, adding flavor to the jungle adventure.
This expansion extends beyond Japan, as Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando plans to incorporate the Donkey Kong Country zone when it launches on May 22, 2025. However, Universal Studios Hollywood’s Super Nintendo World will maintain its current layout without this addition.
The new expansion highlights Nintendo’s dedication to bringing popular games to life, giving fans fresh ways to enjoy their favorite characters and worlds.
