Steam has shattered its own record for concurrent users. This past weekend, an astonishing 37.2 million people were simultaneously logged into Valve’s service. This milestone surpasses the previous record of 36 million users set earlier this year.

The driving force behind this surge? Black Myth: Wukong, the newly released game that’s taken the gaming world by storm. Developed by GameScience, this title has become an overnight sensation, breaking Steam’s record for concurrent players in a single-player game shortly after its launch. In just three days, it sold an impressive 10 million copies.

Black Myth: Wukong’s Impact

The game’s popularity is evident in its player count. Over the last 24 hours, Black Myth: Wukong saw a peak of 2.13 million concurrent players. Its all-time high of 2.41 million players is second only to PUBG: Battlegrounds, which holds the record at 3.25 million. Given the game’s Chinese origins and its basis in the classic novel Journey to the West, it’s estimated that about 80% of its player base is from China.

This success stands in stark contrast to PlayStation’s new shooter, Concord. Despite a large budget and generally positive reviews, Concord’s player numbers peaked at just 697 and have been declining since. At the time of writing, it had only 142 players, while Black Myth: Wukong boasted 1.51 million.

Steam’s Continued Growth

The platform’s growth extends beyond just logged-in users. The number of people actively playing games simultaneously also reached a new high, with 12,534,703 in-game players recorded yesterday.

Steam’s dominance in the PC gaming market shows no signs of waning. The platform continues to attract more users and break its own records. At this rate, reaching 40 million concurrent users seems like a realistic goal in the near future.

This growth demonstrates Steam’s enduring appeal to gamers worldwide. As new hit games like Black Myth: Wukong continue to launch on the platform, we can expect to see even more records broken in the coming months.
