Google has introduced a new AI-powered calling service called “Ask for Me” that helps users get business information without making calls themselves. Right now, it’s being tested with nail salons and auto service centers, where it can ask about prices and available services on behalf of users.
Getting Started with Ask for Me
You can try this feature through Google Search Labs. When you search for a business that supports it, you’ll see the “Ask for Me” option in the results. The AI will guide you through simple questions, like the type of service and car details for auto shops or the service and timing for nail salons. Just enter your contact details, and you’ll get updates on your request.
Google’s “Ask for Me” uses Duplex technology, as confirmed by product lead Rose Yao. When the AI makes a call, it clearly states that it’s from Google and is asking on behalf of a user. Business owners have control over this feature, they can turn it off in their Google Business Profile settings or ask to stop receiving these calls. To avoid overwhelming businesses, Google also limits the number of calls the AI can make.
The information collected from these AI calls helps improve Google’s database, making future inquiries more accurate. Businesses may need some time to adjust to these automated calls, but the goal is to make it easier for users to get business details quickly. This feature is part of Google’s efforts to improve AI-powered communication while being clear about its automated nature.
