Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Worth $400? What Gamers Need to Know

Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked a lot of questions since its reveal in January. Gamers are mainly curious about its power, game lineup, and, most importantly, its price. During a recent earnings call, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, talked about pricing, recognizing the challenges of today’s market while emphasizing Nintendo’s goal of keeping their products affordable.

A lot has changed since 2017 when the original Switch launched for $300. Rising costs and inflation have made pricing more complicated. On top of that, the Switch 2 will have to compete with popular handheld devices like the Steam Deck, making Nintendo’s pricing decision even trickier.

During Nintendo’s third-quarter earnings call, Furukawa talked about these challenges. He explained that inflation and exchange rate changes have created a different market than in 2017. While Nintendo aims to keep prices fair, he said they need to consider many factors before deciding on the final price.

Experts believe the Switch 2 could be priced around $400, though some think it might go up to $500. Rhys Elliot from MIDiA sees $400 as the best price, while Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis bases his sales predictions on that amount. Mat Piscatella from Circana notes that early buyers might be willing to pay more, expecting Nintendo to lower the price later if needed.

Nintendo’s past pricing shows a pattern. When adjusted for inflation, most of its consoles since the Nintendo 64 have launched between $350 and $400. Right now, the Switch OLED sells for $350. With the Switch 2 offering improved Joy-Con controllers with mouse-like features, its price could be higher, even though it has a cheaper LCD screen.

Nintendo’s usual strategy of keeping prices lower than competitors is getting harder. The disc-less PS5 now costs $450, up from its original $400. The Steam Deck starts at $400, but you can sometimes find refurbished ones for under $300. With these pricing changes, it’s tougher for Nintendo to stay ahead with a lower price.

Based on my analysis, the Switch 2 will most likely be priced at $400, with $450 being the highest possible price unless Nintendo introduces major new features in their April presentation. To test this, I showed the Switch 2 reveal to my kids. Their lukewarm reaction and happiness with current games like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder suggest that if the price is too high, some people might hold off on buying it right away.

The success of the Switch 2’s price will depend on the features Nintendo hasn’t revealed yet. In the coming months, they’ll share more details, which will help buyers decide if it’s worth the cost. For families thinking about upgrading, these announcements will play a big role in their decision.

The gaming world is closely watching how Nintendo handles these pricing challenges. They need to balance production costs, what the market expects, and their reputation for affordable, family-friendly prices. Even though rising costs are pushing prices up, Nintendo knows their audience well and will likely focus on making sure the final price is accessible.

The gaming market today brings some tough challenges for Nintendo when it comes to pricing. Both dedicated gamers and casual players are waiting to see if the Switch 2’s features are worth the price. Nintendo is being careful with this decision because getting it right is crucial for the success of their next console.
