Sony recently announced a substantial price increase for the PlayStation 5 in Japan. The standard PS5 model will now cost ¥79,980 (approximately $552), up from ¥66,980 (about $462). The digital-only version sees a similar jump, rising from ¥59,980 (around $414) to ¥72,980 (about $504). These changes will take effect on September 2.
It has been learned that this price hike isn’t limited to just the console. Accessories are also affected, with DualSense controllers now priced at the equivalent of $80, up from $65. The PlayStation Portal will now set you back about $240, increased from its previous $205 price tag.
Sony explained this decision as a response to the current global economic climate and its impact on their business operations. At present, there’s no indication that this price increase will extend to other regions.
Sales and Future Outlook
Despite the price hike, the PlayStation 5 continues to perform well in the market. As of August 2024, Sony has sold an impressive 61.7 million units. However, it’s worth noting that sales have dipped compared to the previous year. Sony has adjusted its sales target for this financial year to 18 million units, down from the initial 21 million.
The gaming community has noticed a scarcity of PS5 exclusives, which might be contributing to the slight decline in hardware sales. Sony has confirmed that we won’t see new releases from their major franchises like Spider-Man, God of War, or The Last of Us this financial year.
Interestingly, rumors are circulating about a potential PS5 Pro launch later in 2024. This could potentially reinvigorate interest in the PlayStation brand and boost sales.
These price increases may disappoint some, but they are a response to current economic conditions. The situation will be monitored closely, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
