Square Enix Faces Huge Loss After Life Is Strange Sequel Flops

Square Enix’s president, Takeshi Kiryu, recently confirmed what many already guessed, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure didn’t sell as well as expected. Despite bringing back Max Caulfield, the game ended up causing a big financial loss for the company, as Kiryu shared in their latest financial report.

Dragon Quest Success Provides Some Relief

Square Enix didn’t share the exact sales numbers, but the losses from Double Exposure were partly balanced out by strong sales of Dragon Quest 3 Remake. This isn’t the first time the company has reported a “large loss”, they’ve used the same term for other underperforming games like Guardians of the Galaxy and some Tomb Raider titles.

The game ended with the hopeful message, “Max Caulfield will return,” but with such poor sales, a future sequel now seems unlikely. Critics and fans had mixed reactions, but in the end, the game didn’t sell well enough for Square Enix to call it a success.

I got the game on release day, but I can see why it didn’t connect with a wider audience the way the original Life Is Strange did.
