Xbox 360 modders have created a new software-only hack called BadUpdate. This clever trick bypasses Microsoft’s security using just a USB drive, allowing custom games and apps to run without opening or modifying the console.
Tests show that, unlike older methods like RGH or JTAG that required opening the console, BadUpdate works with just a USB connection. Once set up, it gives access to the Xbox 360 homebrew store, where games, apps, emulators, utilities, and custom dashboards are available.
Important Limitations
BadUpdate has some important limitations. Each file needs to be manually patched to work on the console. It’s also not always reliable and may take multiple tries to activate. Since it targets Microsoft’s security system, the exploit has to be restarted every time the console is turned on.
To use this method, only three things are needed: a USB drive, the exploit code, and a trial version of Rock Band Blitz to help with the bypass. Step-by-step instructions can be found in Modern Vintage Gamer’s detailed YouTube tutorial or in a shorter guide on the GitHub page where the exploit is available.
